Cook Island Aquatic Reserve (Jungarra Ngarrian), just offshore from Fingal Head, is known for resident sea turtles, varied reef environments and a diverse mix of tropical and temperate marine life.
Depending on the season and conditions, divers may encounter green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles, manta rays, wobbegongs, giant groupers, nudibranchs, colourful reef fish and seasonal leopard sharks.

Two Dives for Certified Divers
Explore Cook Island on two guided dives with sites selected according to the day’s conditions and diver experience. Divers are organised into small underwater groups with a maximum 1:6 guide-to-diver ratio, allowing our team to choose the most suitable areas of the reserve rather than following the same dive plan every day.

What to Expect
All Cook Island experiences begin at Gold Coast Dive Centre in Miami.
From there, guests travel with us to the Tweed Heads launch site before boarding the vessel for Cook Island.
Your trip includes:
- Check-in and equipment preparation
- Transport to Tweed Heads
- Boat and safety briefing
- Travel to Cook Island
- Activity-specific briefing
- Diving or snorkelling
- Light refreshments on board
- Return transport to Gold Coast Dive Centre
Certified divers also return to the dive centre for equipment rinse, a short debrief and dive logging. Actual departure and return times may vary depending on weather, tides, Tweed Bar conditions and operational requirements.

Guests with their own mask, snorkel and fins are encouraged to bring equipment they are already comfortable using.
Shared Vessel Departures
Depending on booking numbers, certified divers, introductory divers and snorkellers may occasionally travel on the same vessel.
Each activity is briefed, supervised and managed separately.
Certified divers remain organised in their own dive groups, introductory divers remain under instructor supervision, and snorkellers receive appropriate crew supervision and in-water support.
When booking numbers and operational conditions allow, dedicated departures may operate.
Plan for Seasickness
Cook Island is an open-ocean destination and sea conditions can vary.
If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend preparing appropriate medication before departure.
We are unable to provide medication.
FAQs
Will I see sea turtles?
Sea turtles are resident at Cook Island and sightings are common throughout the year. However, all wildlife is wild and individual encounters cannot be guaranteed.
How are dive sites selected?
Dive sites are selected according to weather, swell, current, visibility, tides, Tweed Bar conditions and diver experience.
Specific dive sites cannot be guaranteed.
Can snorkellers and divers be on the same boat?
Yes. On selected departures, different activities may share the same vessel.
Each activity is briefed, supervised and managed separately.
When booking numbers allow, dedicated departures may operate.
Why can some trips take 5–7 hours?
Trip duration depends on marine conditions, the activities operating that day and whether the vessel is shared with another activity.
For example, snorkellers or introductory divers travelling with a Double Dive departure may spend additional time on board while certified divers complete their second dive.
Do I need to bring my own equipment?
Certified divers may bring their own equipment or hire equipment during booking.

Snorkelling equipment is available if required, though guests are encouraged to bring their own mask, snorkel and fins if they have equipment they are comfortable using.
Do I need previous experience?
Double Dive / Cook Island After Dark: certification required.
Try Scuba: no previous scuba experience required.
Snorkelling: no previous snorkelling experience required, but participants must be confident swimmers in open water.
Will I get seasick?
Cook Island is an offshore destination and sea conditions can vary.
Guests prone to motion sickness should prepare suitable medication before arrival.
Where do we meet?
All guests check in at Gold Coast Dive Centre, Miami before travelling to the Tweed Heads launch site.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are not included.
